What Should Be Included in a Website Quote?

A cheap website quote often means SEO and marketing basics were never included at all. Here's how to work out exactly what you're paying for before you sign.

Two agencies quote for the same business. One comes in at $2,500. The other at $7,000. On paper, the cheap quote looks like the smart choice - until six months later, the site isn’t showing up on Google for anything, because nobody ever set it up to.

This isn’t necessarily a dishonest agency. It might genuinely be a well-built, well-designed website. It’s just that “a website” and “a website that’s actually findable” aren’t automatically the same purchase - and a lot of business owners don’t find out which one they bought until it’s too late to matter.

”A Website” Means Different Things to Different Agencies

Some agencies sell exactly what the word implies: pages, design, a working contact form. Nothing more. Basic SEO, content strategy, ongoing optimisation - all of that sits in a separate service, priced separately, and only added if you specifically ask. Other agencies bundle a solid SEO foundation into every build as standard.

Neither approach is wrong. A stripped-back build at a lower price is a completely reasonable product if that’s genuinely what you need. The problem is when the difference isn’t made clear upfront, and a business owner assumes “website” means “website that can be found” - because in 2026, that assumption is doing a lot of work. Nearly half of all Australian Google searches carry local intent, and a site with no on-page SEO, no structured metadata, and no Google Business Profile setup simply won’t surface for any of them, no matter how good it looks once someone finally lands on it.

Use the Launch Checklist as a Buyer’s Yardstick, Not Just a Go-Live List

We’ve already published a 27-point website launch checklist - genuinely the complete list. We don’t recommend skipping anything on it, whether that’s technical fundamentals, on-page SEO, or the basic marketing setup that gets a new site actually seen.

Most people only reach for a checklist like that right before launch, as a final QA pass. It’s just as useful earlier - as a yardstick for evaluating a quote before you sign anything. Take the list to any agency you’re considering and ask directly: which of these are included in the price you’ve quoted me, and which cost extra? A specific, itemised answer tells you exactly what you’re buying. A vague one is worth treating as a warning sign.

Understanding What You’re Paying For Matters as Much as the Price Itself

This connects directly to what website design actually costs - a fixed price only means something once you know what it covers. $2,500 for a bare build and $2,500 for a build with SEO foundations included are not comparable numbers, even though they look identical on an invoice.

Before you sign anything, you need clarity on two separate things: exactly what’s included in the build itself, and the total cost of getting everything on the checklist in place - whether that’s bundled into the build price or billed as a follow-on SEO and marketing engagement. A cheap-looking quote that excludes the second half of that equation often ends up costing more once you go back and pay for it properly later, on top of the months of lost visibility while the site sat unfindable.

What a Good Agency Should Be Able to Do

A good agency should be able to take the 27-point checklist and give you a single, all-in price that covers it - if their default website offering doesn’t already include everything on it as standard. That’s not an unreasonable ask. It’s the difference between a business that’s being upfront about scope and one that’s hoping you won’t ask.

If you’re comparing quotes right now, don’t just compare the number. Compare what each number actually buys - and if you’re not sure, use the checklist to find out.
